CTFL Season Underway in Montreal
The early 2026 Canadian Track and Field League standings are beginning to take shape as athletes across the country post their opening free marks with only one CTFL preliminary meet having been completed in Montreal on May 16th. Under the league’s points system, athletes accumulate points through three separate categories: a free mark achieved at any sanctioned meet, a prelim mark earned at one of five official CTFL preliminary meets, and a finals mark earned at the CTFL Finals in Ottawa.
At this stage of the season, the reigning champions, the Bears, have taken an early lead as the fans look to a prelim dense schedule over the next two weeks. The Bears currently lead the league with 501 points, followed by the Arctics with 446 points, the Huskies with 407 points and the Spitfires with 260 points.
Several athletes have already delivered standout performances in the free mark category. For the Huskies, Stephen Abosi sits among the league’s top men’s sprinters after running 10.36 seconds in the men’s 100 metres, earning 25 points. Caleb Emon also secured 25 points in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.19 metres, while Maximus Thiessen matched that total after running 14:24.63 in the men’s 5000 metres. Other major contending times ran in the free mark category include David Moloungou in the men's 400mH time of 50.36, Frederique Chiasson in the women's 200m of 23.50, Lauren Gale's 51.24 in the women's 400m and Kaden Kingsmith's 800m time of 1:46.74.
The Bears have also produced several major performances following the Montreal Prelim as they jumped from 3rd to 1st overall. The biggest standout performance from the first prelim of the season Maoly St-Germain's time of 13.65 in the women's 100mH will set her up well for the remainder of the CTFL season in what is a stacked women's sprint hurdle event.
With only one prelim in the books, the standings remain highly fluid. With each athlete capable of earning up to 25 points in each category, the upcoming CTFL preliminary meets are expected to dramatically reshape the league table as teams chase qualification and championship positioning.
