Points System 2026

Points System

Overview

CTFL athletes will accumulate points based off of three performances, a free mark, prelim mark and a finals mark. Based on the athletes' cumulative points across the three marks, they will win prize money and individual accolades while assisting their teams point total.

How To Earn Points

Athletes have three opportunities to earn points. These opportunities are called "marks" and will earn athletes between zero to 25 points respectively based on how their performance ranks against their competitors in each mark. (see example below)

All athletes will have the ability to have three marks counted towards their cumulative individual points as well as their teams overall points: a free mark, prelim mark and a finals mark. Core athletes will be required to compete at a minimum of one of the five preliminary meets in addition to the CTFL Finals. All athletes are invited to the CTFL Finals where the prize money will be distributed based on the athletes season points total as well as their CTFL Finals performance. In order to be eligible to win the individual cash prizes at the end of the season an athlete must have competed at the Finals and met all other athlete requirements.

What are the Marks?

  • Free Mark: Each athlete will receive a "free mark" which can be counted for points and can be completed at any sanctioned meet as per their provincial athletics organization (these are considered free meets and can be achieved anywhere in the world as long as they are recognized as official meets). Throughout the season, athletes can receive a maximum of 25 point(s) based on where they rank against their competitors in the "free mark" category.
  • Prelim Mark: Athletes will also be required to compete at a minimum of one CTFL prelim meet of which there will a minimum of 5 throughout Canada (locations & dates to be announced at a later date). Athletes will receive between 0 and 25 points based on where they rank against their competitors in the CTFL prelim category.
  • Championship Mark: On June 27th, the CTFL Finals will be hosted in Ottawa under a class D Challenger series meet. Points will be distributed to the athletes that compete at the CTFL Finals based on finishing position with 1st receiving 25 points, 2nd receiving 20 points, etc.

Example of Core Athlete Points

Core athletes will score points by comparing their marks against their competitors in the same category (free mark, prelim mark and championship mark are the three categories).

Using an example of a previous years men's 400mH standings, these would be the results:

Bonus Points and Tie Breakers

To incentivize athletes to attend more than one of the five designated prelim meets, all additional prelim meets a core athlete attends will earn the athlete an additional point to their season's total. Tie breakers will be decided based on the athletes best mark achieved at a CTFL meet.

At the end of the season, athletes that finish within the top three athletes in each event will earn a cash prize and medal. Members of the winning team will also be awarded $250 each pending they fulfill all athlete requirements.
